Context

The relation between the physical objects and the digitized copies will from time to time result in sub collections, these arise when physical objects consist of multiple elements, these will often become clearly defined sub objects when digitized, an example could be the pages in a newspaper.

Description of pattern

When some collection becomes digitized manifestations will become fragmented, in order to handle this the fragments will be combined to become one Manifestation. This is done to reflect the physical item, the items in the digital manifestation will be fragmented as a result of the nature of digitalization.

Other collections will remain solid in their manifestation during manifestation and thus not have the need to handle digitally induced fragmentation

Problem description

There are many types of collections that have a natural fragmentation, imagine a CD with several tracks. Other collections have limited natural fragmentation, imagine the sections in a newspaper. And some have no natural fragmentation, for instance a short story.

The diversity of fragmentation will result in difficulty in deciding upon the level of fragmentation in the object model in the DOMS, and will further be complicated by the process of digitization. Some non-fragmented items will become fragmented, for instance the short story, and some could be de-fragmented, the CD could be digitized as one track.

Solution

Make sure to retain the fragmentation of the physical object, and try not to induce new fragmentation, when fragmentation can not be avoided hide it from the view of FRBR expression level.

Consider next

What can be done to reduce fragmentation in the digitization process? If unintentional fragmentation is unavoidable consider how this should be handled in the general Collection.
