Chemists cannot get hold of data, licenced.

Not easy to go from fulltext to data.

80%-99.9% of data is thrown out. Some of it are sold back to the universities.

Academic thesis - our biggest assets, not controlled by publishers. MUST NEVER LOSE CONTROL. 30% of modern science done in thesis. Much more peer review.

Must not store only as pdf. Pdf destroyes information, changes chars, lose newlines and so on.

You must be sitting in the lab to help scientist

RCSB

Put in repository -> more work for scientist, will not do it.

Interpro

Bioscience uses these.

Won't put everything in, too much work.

File systems are the most valuable system devised

Scientist knows

CrystalEye, Jmol, blue Obelisk

They will not put data in the repository. Use stick: They will not graduate without.

Oscar (tool) : Text mining will be the future.

Semantic information:

Do not try to make electronic notepads, the scientist do not want them.

Get into the scientific process as early as possible.

Word2002 is good, xml in/out. Keep using it, rather than changing it.

Recording and reporting are not the same. Enable text mining

Active directory - Imap for desktops Get at the authoring process, ICE?

15 years. If you have already lost 90% of the data, you have nothing to preserve.

Chemists will use word

PDF allows for poor data extraction, exspecially for chemical data.
